Environment

The provincial capital of the Woleu-Ntem region, this charming town lies 411 km from Libreville.
The town has a glorious past, resisting German occupation during WWII and also experiencing German occupation during WWI.

According to local tradition, Oyem is the name of a tree.

With a wealth of items of interest to the ecotourist, the surrounding area will not leave the nature lover indifferent:

  • Minkebe forest, a nature reserve managed by the World Wildlife Fund. This forest has witnessed violent clashes; between the two fang clans Essamessele and Essansia, and during WW2. Fishing and hunting are practiced.
  • Mounts Nkoum and Salem have large crosses at the summit.
  • The Mekok me kwa caves are an illustration of pristine nature.
