Annie Flore Batchiellilys to the Olympia of Paris

The star of Gabonese music, Annie-Flore Batchiellilys, took to the stage of the mythical venue of the Paris Olympia, on 21 January.

The singer-songwriter needs no introduction in Gabon, and her fame is spreading all over the world thanks to a series of tours. She has performed over 300 concerts in Africa, Europe and the USA, with songs like “Je t’invite”, which is a musical tribute to Gabon. It is hardly surprising that the Minister invited Annie-Flore to become the international ambassador for Gabonese tourism.

The audience turned out in force to support the singer and the other artists performing with her: Naneth, Pascale Mengone, Axel Agambouet and Papé Nziengui.

The race will start in the province of Haut-Ogooué (in the south east of Gabon). The cyclists will then travel to Lambaréné by air or sea, cross the village of Dr Schweitzer and end their race in Libreville. The entire itinerary is 594 km.

Success for the 2nd edition of the Balafons Gabon Music Awards
Geared essentially towards local artists, the Balafons Gabon Music Awards contest organised by the Albertine Amissa Bongo Foundation is a Gabonese cultural event which, from its first edition in 2006, has enjoyed a wide success with national and international audiences, and has become a showcase for Gabonese culture beyond our national borders. The international media turned out in number to relay the event.

Guests included not only the international artiste Germaine Jackson and the members of the Executive committee of the Amissa Bongo Foundation, but also comperes and artists from other countries.

For this second edition, many young artists (chorists, rappers and vocalists, etc.) came to take part in a contest that combines modern and traditional music and which awards the best artists in each musical category.

The awards were presented to the various artists at a ceremony on Saturday 15 December, including Arnold Djoud, best artist of the year 2007, the diva of Gabonese music, Patience Dabany, best artist of the year 2007 and Hilarion Nguema, the other icon of Gabonese music, in recognition of her entire musical career. The winner will record an album with a music label.

As a reminder, on the fringes of the Balafons Gabon Music Awards, the Albertine Amissa Bongo Foundation organised concerts by Sean Paul and Miriam Makeba.

The President Omar Bongo Ondimba receives the 2007 Manhae Peace Prize
The Manhae Peace Prize was awarded to Head of State Omar Bongo Ondimba, by the Manhae Foundation. This 11th edition took place in South Korea, in the presence of the President of South Korea, Roh Moo Hyun.

The Gabonese President is the second African leader to receive the award, whose winners include the President of the Republic of Korea, Dae Jung (in 2003), the former South African President Nelson Mandela (in 2004), the leader of the Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama (2005) and the President of Mongolia, Nambaryn Enkhbayar (in 2006).

The prize was awarded in recognition of his efforts directed at establishing peace and resolving armed conflicts in the sub-region of Central Africa, particularly in Chad, the Congo, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two other factors were also taken into account by the jury: the relations concluded in 1962 between South Korea and Gabon, and the President’s actions in favour of his country, turning it into a stable country and introducing political pluralism and a democratic constitution. Note that Gabon is sixth-ranking most peaceful country in Africa behind Ghana, Madagascar, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia.

Primitive Art on show at Le Touquet Museum
Gabon passion The “Gabon – Passions” exhibition, inspired by the Virtual Museum of Gabon website (www.gabonart.com), with the support and cooperation of private collectors, photographer Patrice Konrad, the museum of Boulogne sur Mer, and the group 2P2M (Patrimoine et Musées en Pays du Montreuillois), will go on show at the municipal museum in Le Touquet. The exhibition will allow a wide public to discover various aspects of the life of this enchanting country.

The wealth of tradition and the diversity of contemporary artistic creation in Gabon are presented through a combination of photography, video footage, painting and sculpture, in addition to a wide variety of ritual objects and everyday items (some of which, particularly rare, are on show for the first time).

Interactive, educational and entertaining, this event will also highlight the influences that Primitive Art in general, and Gabon in particular, have had on artists such as Vasarely and Magnelli, whose works are part of the permanent collections of Le Touquet Museum, the Musée de France, etc. Passions at work!
