In respect of the bids for developing the Bélinga iron deposit and building the infrastructures, railways, ports and power stations to accompany the exploitation of the iron ore, the President of the Republic, considering the importance that he has attached to this particular issue, called on the government to take a decision.
Consequently, following a wide-ranging, extremely rich debate and the full analysis of the two (2) bids, the Cabinet decided to entrust the development of the Bélinga iron deposit and the construction of the infrastructures to accompany its exploitation to a Chinese consortium, the reference shareholder in which is the company CMEC.
For the purposes of monitoring and controlling this major project, the Gabonese State shall be a party to the capital of the said company.
Similarly, the Cabinet would like to pay a glowing tribute to Brazilian company CVRD, which submitted the second bid for the development of the Bélinga iron deposit.
This economic partner, which is already involved in a major development programme for the manganese deposits in Franceville and Okondja, will receive the backing of the Gabonese government to continue its mining activities in Gabon, especially in respect of copper and its other choice of ores.
Finally, the Cabinet wished to praise its Chinese and Brazilian development partners for their renewed interest in Gabon's mining industry.
