NATIONAL PARKS

AKANDA

Surface area: 540 km²
Location: in the north-east of the Estuaire province, near to Libreville. Bordering Mondah bay and Corisco bay.
Special features: the largest concentration of migratory birds in Gabon.


MONTS BIROUGOU

Surface area: 690 km²
Location: Ngounié province. In the south of the Chaillu massif - the site derives its name from Mont Bigourou (altitude: 975 metres).
Special features: mountainous landscapes, forest refuge with a wealth of biological resources.


IVINDO

Surface area: 3,000 km²
Location: Ogooué-Ivindo province. Located between Ogooué and Ivindo, downstream from Makokou.
Special features: impressive elephants, gorillas, African forest waterfalls.


LOANGO

Surface area: 1,550 km²
Location: Ogooué-Maritime province. Located between the Nkomi and Ndogo lagoons.
Special features: Loango is the natural marvel of the entire West-African coast. Elephants on the beach, hippopotamuses surfing the waves, and out to sea, a pod of humpback whales.


LOPE

Surface area: 4,970 km²
Location: along the river Ogooué, nestled at the junction between Ogooé-Ivindo, Ogooué-Lolo and Moyen-Ogooué.
Special features: a patchwork of forests and savannahs. The largest concentration of mandrills, traces of man dating back more than 400,000 years.


MAYUMBA

Surface area: 80 km²
Location: in the south of Nyanga. A strip of sand located at the southernmost tip of Gabon, from Mayumba to the Congo border.
Special features: world's leading egg-laying site for leatherback turtles.


MINKEBE

Surface area: 7,560 km²
Location: Woleu-Ntem province. Located at the north-east tip of the country, in an uninhabited mass of forest.
Special features: rocky domes overhanging the forest, Gabon's largest uninhabited area of forest.


MONTS DE CRISTAL

Surface area: 1,200 km²
Location: border between Estuaire and Woleu-Ntem. Three hours from Libreville. Located in the famous mountain range between Equatorial Guinea and Ogooué.
Special features: forest area boasting the richest variety of plants in Africa.


MOUKALABA-DOUDOU

Surface area: 4,500 km²
Location: Nyanga province. Located in the south-west of the country, sprawling across part of Nyanga's savannahs and the forest mass around the Doudou mountains.
Special features: Last-surviving wildlife populations, with defassa waterbucks and jackals.


MWAGNE

Surface area: 1,160 km²
Location: Ogooué-Ivindo province. Located to the east of Makokou, between the rivers Lodié and Louyaé, up to the Congo border.
Special features: Gabon's largest bai (clearing), teeming with gorillas and elephants.


PLATEAUX BATEKE

Surface area: 2,050 km²
Location: Haut-Ogooué province. Located to the south of the uninhabited part of the savannahs of the Batéké plateaus.
Special features: gorillas used to the presence of humans, exceptionally diverse avifauna. Last refuge for large mammals on the plateaus.


PONGARA

Surface area: 870 km²
Location: Estuaire province. Located on the left bank of the Komo estuary, facing Libreville and along the Atlantic shoreline.
Special features: beautiful beaches and mangrove swamps opposite Libreville, a leisure area for city dwellers.


WAKA

Surface area: 1070 km²
Location: located in the Chaillu massif, between Fougamou and Lopé.
Special features: deep 100 km long forest-covered rift valley in the heart of the country. Highly mountainous area. In the heart of Mitsogho, the erstwhile soul of an exclusively Gabonese culture.
