The President of Gabon, Omar Bongo Ondimba died early Monday afternoon, June 8, 2009
The President of Gabon, Omar Bongo Ondimba, died early Monday afternoon in Barcelona at the age of 73, according to a message written by the Gabonese Prime Minister Jean Eyéghé Ndong, hand delivered to journalists present at the Quiron clinic.
“At 2:30 pm (12:30 GMT) the medical team informed the officials and family members present, as well as myself, that the President of the Republic, Head of State Omar Bongo Ondimba had passed away following a heart attack,” stated the message of the Prime Minister.
The office of the president immediately declared a month of national mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast to express the pain felt by the Gabonese people.

Composition of the new Gabonese government
as of 19 June 2009
Acting President of the Republic of Gabon Mrs Rose Francine Rogombé appointed a new government on June 20th. The Prime Minister, Jean Eyéghé Ndong, presented the government’s resignation the day after the funeral of His Excellency El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba, in conformity with the constitutional provisions relative to interim power.
The new list also comprises 48 members. The Prime Minister, among others, was re-appointed to his position.

Official launch of the Saint-Joseph Centre
The Saint-Joseph Centre is the fruition of the work conducted by the foundation in memory of Mademoiselle Albertine Amissa Bongo Ondimba. The first of its kind in Gabon, the centre was officially inaugurated on 7 March. For the occasion, a free multidisciplinary medical caravan was organised. The aim of the centre is to provide free medical care for all underprivileged groups and in particular, to provide accommodation for young unmarried mothers who have dropped out from school, to allow them to continue to study and prepare for the future.
