MOVE INTO A PARK

Fully aware of tourism’s economic and social possibilities, Gabon is building a reputation as a unique destination based on its rich natural, cultural and artistic heritage. According to multiple surveys, everyone seems to agree that Gabon is blessed with natural riches; diverse flora and fauna; a favorable location; stable politics; a peaceful and hospitable population; a protected ecosystem with rare and precious elements as well as a wide array of cultures and traditions that remain intact to this day.

In order to showcase these riches while at the same time preserving them, the country has engaged in the "Green Gabon" programme advocated by President Ali Bongo Ondimba. Important projects have been established, in particular the privatisation, renovation or construction of hotels such as the ultramodern Laaico complex, for which work is in progress in Libreville.

In addition, in August 2002, the late President Omar Bongo Ondimba has created thirteen national parks throughout the country. These parks will increase tourist revenue and provide a more diverse offering for the international tourism market.

Over the past few years, tourism in Gabon has been on the climb. However, there is a need for greater structure. For this reason, Gabonese authorities are focused on the following:

  • modernizing and strengtheningexisting tourist facilities in the provinces and near the parks,
  • increasing the activity of travel agencies for improved charter services for tourists,
  • and involving economic players in promoting Gabonese tourist activities, particularly abroad.
Gabon does not wish to solicit tourism for the masses that will damage the environment or local cultures. It is aiming for high-quality tourist activities that are protective of nature and the local people.

Consequently, the Minister of Tourism has presented a vision of ecotourism to be implemented in the national parks. This vision incorporates the notions of preserving biodiversity and local cultures and promotes sustainable economic growth for these populations; In this way, environmental protection and conservation are serving to increase Gabon’s social and economic growth.

The Destination : despite its potential, Gabon is not yet among the top ten African tourist destinations, but it will soon be one of the most profitable due to the willingness expressed by decision-makers and the expertise of national and foreign contributors.
