Location Gabon's fourth province is situated on the borders of the Chaillu massif and the Mayombe mountains. Ngounié offers visitors a mythical landscape and an unrivalled recreational area. The province is bordered by the Congo, Moyen Ogooué, Ogooué Lolo, Ogooué Maritime and Nyanga, and covers an area of 37,750 km².
River Ngounié Environment : The province derives its name from the river Ngounié, a large tributary of the river Ogooué originating in the far south of the country and irrigating the large forest plain separating the crystalline Chaillu massif from the Ikoundou mountains. Steep massifs, plains, dense forests, savannahs, rivers and lakes, cliffs, deep caves and vast farming areas shape the landscape, punctuated with small villages and hamlets. Temperatures fluctuate between 26 and 34°C. The population was recorded at 77,781 in 1998 and comprises Nzémbi, Punu, Éshira, Massango, Mitsogo, Apindji, Akélé, Baravama, Bawumbu and Pygmy tribes, to name a few. History : In December 1858, the explorer Du Chaillu navigated his way along the river Ngounié to reach Fougamou. He discovered the different riverside tribes that he described during his second journey. The Catholic missions of Mandji, Sindara and Saint-Martin were subsequently founded.
