Ali Bongo Ondimba is sworn in as President

The official inauguration ceremony of President elect Ali Bongo Ondimba took place at the Presidential Palace before the Constitutional Court and in the presence of a large number of Heads of State, National and international VIPs, delegations and guests.

The ceremony was witness to various levels of representation from around fifty friendly countries, with high points including the Head of State’s solemn oath and inaugural speech.

Beforehand, the President of the Constitutional Court issued a reminder of the decision of the Court adjudicating on the recourse to litigation to annul the election of 30 August 2009. With a watertight legal case in terms of both form and substance, Marie Madeleine Mborantsuo read out the decision confirming the election of Ali Bongo Ondimba with 41.79% of the votes.

Next to speak was the President of the National Assembly, Mr. Guy Nzoumba Ndama, who congratulated President Ali Bongo Ondimba, inviting him to reassure and gain the confidence of his compatriots regarding their legitimate expectations. Evoking both Sisyphus and Hercules, he measured the amplitude of the task and exhorted the President to pull out the stops in setting a course for emergence and good governance.

President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s speech was a veritable roadmap for the long dreamt of emerging Gabon that he intends to build with the help of his compatriots and all the willing.

Solemn and serene, pausing from time to time, and with emotion at the end, with a pious thought for a person particularly dear to him - El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba - Ali Bongo Ondimba donned the robes of the Chief of State, determined to rise to every challenge and to be "happy and at peace only when all the Gabonese people are happy and at peace".
